Bert Newton and Lucy Durack named king and queen of Moomba
TV legend Bert Newton and well-known stage actor Lucy Durack are the latest Melbourne monarchs.“When I was first asked to be king for the 60th anniversary I thought, ‘I wonder who knocked it back?’”, Newton said.“I can’t tell you how thrilled I am to be king again.“I love this city, I believe in this city.”Sixty years ago Newton reported on Melbourne’s first Moomba Festival and said he was honoured to be invited back again after being the festival’s first local king in 1978.He credited Lord Mayor Robert Doyle with resurrecting Moomba after it suffered “a pretty quiet time for a while”.
Newton’s queen, Lucy Durack, best known for starring roles in Wicked and Legally Blonde, said:“Moomba sums up what I love most about Melbourne, it has a real community heart.”Cr Doyle said more than a million people were expected to flood into the city for the free festival.“Together, Bert and Lucy represent Melbourne’s fun-loving and creative nature, and we are honoured to have them as our 2014 Monarchs”, Cr Doyle said.Moomba kicks off on the banks of the Yarra River on the Labour Day weekend, March 7 to 10.
