Big Burke and Wills Trek Charity Challenge 2014
The Big Burke and Wills Trek charity challenge will replicate a 330km portion of the original 3750km route taken by Robert O’Hara Burke and William John Wills and their men. The 11-day walk starts at the Dig Tree at Cooper Creek in Queensland’s southwest in August next year2014 and continues to the Burke and Wills memorial at the iconic Birdsville Pub, crossing the Birdsville Track, the Strezelecki and Sturts Stony Desert.Money raised goes towards the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF). Founder of the Big Red Run at Birdsville, Greg Donovan, created the event through his Born to Run Foundation. Burke and Wills set off to cross Australia from Melbourne to the Gulf of Carpentaria in 1860, mapping the unknown interior of Australia, but perished in the Outback on the return journey.
